THE FUTURE’S ADAPTATION
ON NETflix
The Future is a Japanese science fiction novel which
is starting to sell in noticeable numbers. The author of
this novel wants to see an adaptation of his creation
into a show.
A new American producer who loves his book agree
to his idea and is convinced that it’ll make a great
show.
He wants to have the support of a streaming platform
to make the adaptation more visible to people.
However he doesn’t have that much knowledge
about Japanese cultures and preferences in terms of
movies or TV shows.
That’s why he asked two of his employee, Gilbert and
Mayouran to analyze Japanese audio-visual
preferences and how he can make this adaptation a
success in Japan.
During this presentation 4 questions need to be
answered :
Which streaming platform should we contact/use ?
Is the adaption is going to be a movie or a tv show ?
Which is the best type of TV show/movie for this
adaptation ?
Which director should we contact for this adaptation ?

Netflix is the streaming platform to
work with !
Netflix started to expand to Asia in 2015
with the creation of Netflix Japan.
The number of shows produced in
Japan increased by x3.5 since 2018 and
it’s approximatively the same for all East
Asians countries.
It means that Netflix is interrested to
produce tv shows or movies in Asia and
is starting to have experience with asian
and particulary japanese audiences
which can be interesting for us. Moreover
working with Netflix to make this
adaptation can help us to have a bigger
audience.
JAPAN’S NETFLIX CONTAINS MAINLY TV SHOWS
Movies and TV shows split per country TV shows are really popular in
Japan
Deciding between tv show or movie for
adaptating a book is something to
overlook.
If we take the case of Western countries,
movies are mostly more produced than TV
shows.
Contrary to East-Asian Countries that
produces mainly TV shows.
Japan’s TV shows production represents
66,8% to 33,2% that represents movies
production percentage.
It means that East-Asian countries are
more interested to watch tv shows so It’ll
be more interesting to adapt the novel in
a TV show.

other genre in Japan.
134 TV shows on Netflix Japan are anime series,
and it represents more than 50% of all Netflix Japan
contents.
Anime is obviously part of Japan’s culture.
Adapting our book into an anime TV show can
interest more people in Japan and we can
potentially create a real hype that can expand to
East-Asia or even Western countries.
